Dear [MP’s Name],
I am writing to you as a parent of a child with a disability and a participant in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). I am deeply concerned about the recent recommendations made in the NDIS Pricing Review and the significant negative impact they will have on children and families like ours.
The proposed changes (particularly the reduction in travel rates and the failure to increase the hourly rate for allied health professionals) are short-sighted and risk undermining the quality, accessibility, and continuity of care for thousands of vulnerable Australians.
Children and families will be adversely affected in the following ways:
-
Reduced Access to Services: Many children, especially those in regional and outer metro areas, rely on therapists who travel to homes, schools, and childcare settings. Cuts to travel rates mean providers may no longer be able to offer outreach services, forcing families to travel long distances or go without support.
-
Therapist Workforce Shortage: Without a fair increase in the hourly rate, skilled allied health professionals may leave the NDIS sector for better-paid roles in private practice or hospitals. This will reduce availability and increase waitlists.
-
Fragmented Care: Children often require multi-disciplinary support (e.g. speech pathologists, occupational therapists, dietitians). Underfunded services mean fewer opportunities for collaboration between providers, weakening the quality and consistency of support.
-
Greater Burden on Families: Parents are already stretched navigating appointments, advocacy, and care. Travel cuts and fewer providers will add to this burden, causing financial strain and emotional stress.
-
Undermining Early Intervention: High-quality early intervention is proven to reduce long-term costs and improve lifelong outcomes. These cuts threaten access to timely and consistent therapy, putting this principle at risk.

I strongly urge you to advocate within Parliament and to the Minister for the NDIS for the following changes:
-
Restore full travel rates for allied health professionals to ensure equitable access to community and home-based services.
-
Increase the hourly rate for allied health providers to reflect the complexity, administrative load, and multidisciplinary nature of NDIS-funded care.
-
Protect access to evidence-based, family-centred early intervention that is critical in the early years of a child’s development.
Families like mine rely on the NDIS to give our children the best chance at a meaningful and independent life. These proposed pricing changes threaten to undo years of progress.
Please stand with us and ensure the NDIS remains a scheme that supports, not restricts, children and families.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
